L’Arche Syracuse is an intentional community that provides inclusive homes and services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in Syracuse, NY. L’Arche Syracuse is partnered with AccessCNY to deliver services in its four homes and a day habilitation program, it is also formally affiliated with L’Arche USA as a member community. L’Arche USA represents the global Federation of L’Arche and works alongside L’Arche communities in the United States to advance the rights and inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities through inclusive leadership, engagement, and brining the power of community to life.
ROLE SUMMARY
The Executive Director-Community Leader (ED-CL) serves as the Chief Executive Officer of L’Arche Syracuse, responsible for ensuring alignment with the mission and values of L’Arche as stated in the L’Arche Charter while overseeing all aspects of operations including administration & compliance, financial management, communications and public relations, fundraising, partnering with the board of directors, and planning for the future.
The ED-CL will be accountable to the L’Arche Syracuse Board of Directors and work collaboratively with AccessCNY and within the Federation of L’Arche.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Values and Practices
- Champion the L’Arche mission, identity, core values, and practices as expressed in the L’Arche Charter to foster a thriving L’Arche community and organization
- Promote leadership opportunities for ‘core members’ (adults with I/DD receiving services from the organization)
- Develop and maintain strong relationships grounded in mutuality and accountability
- Foster a sense of solidarity with and connection to the wider Federation of L’Arche
Administration and Operations
- Oversees daily operations to ensure safety and quality of services including staffing, residential programs, day programs, and administrative systems.
- Supervises the Leadership Team by setting clear expectations, delegating effectively, and ensuring leaders in the organization are nurtured in their leadership practices and connection with one another
- Establishes oversight systems with accountability, monitors compliance with all New York State certification requirements, and satisfies the requirements as set forth by the related party contract agreements
- Oversees payroll and benefit management in accordance with approved payroll and benefit management plans and/or services
- Serves as the L’Arche Syracuse representative to AccessCNY, Inc. in fulfilling the related parties contract requirements as specified in the agreement between these corporate partners; and continuously assesses agency needs and opportunities for expanding and strenghening this partnership
- Serves as the L’Arche Syracuse representative to L’Arche USA and L’Arche International, attending regular in-person and virtual meetings/events, collaborating with L’Arche USA staff, and ensuring compliance with membership guidelines
Financial Management
- Leads financial strategy and business planning with the Leadership Team and Board, while overseeing the annual budget approval process
- Oversees preperation of the annual audit, consolidated fiscal report, and other required accounting as may be needed
- Ensures the timely preparation, processing, accuracy, integrity and accounting for all materials related to income, billing, accounts payable, SSI/SSA/SSP benefits for people with I/DD receiving services, and other assets in accordance with the requirements of oversight financial authorities and in compliance with L’Arche’s financial policies
- Ensure grant compliance and contract management
- Provides fiscal oversight, including review of monthly reconciliations and long-term planning
- Ensures appropriate financial controls and risk-management strategies are in place
- Participates in Finance Committee of the Board
Communication and Public Relations
- Maintains positive professional reputation in the wider community, representing L’Arche Syracuse externally with media, civic groups, and faith communities
- Builds partnerships with mission-aligned organizations
- Ensures that L’Arche Syracuse uses consistent messaging, design, and voice, building brand recognition when prompting the organization and its mission
Fundraising
- Partners with Board and staff on an annual fundraising plan and goals
- Cultivates relationships with donors, sponsors, and foundations
- Develops and grows fundraising systems and strategies that enable the organization to meet its financial goals, enrich the life of the community, and carry out its operations above and beyond the public funding available
Partner with the Board of Directors
- Develops and maintains a strong working relationship with Board and Board committees
- Effectively communicates relevant information to inform Board decisions and provides all necessary reports in support of the Board’s compliance with fiscal, governance, legal, and strategic planning responsibilities
- Supports the Board in the creation and implementation of policy and procedures
- Works with the Board to set strategic priorities with measurable goals that leadership can monitor and be held accountable to
Planning for the Future
- Through an inclusive visioning process, works with the Board and L’Arche community and organization to establish goals and strategies to advance the mission
- Prioritizes the needs and insights of people with disabilities in listening and future planning
- Ensures goals are measured and evaluated in support of strategic priorities
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum 3 years in a senior leadership role within human services, community-based care, or nonprofit management
- 3-5 years management experience, including direct oversight of a team of 3 or more employees
- Experience creating operating budgets and expense management
- Experience with strategic planning
- Demonstrated ability to work within collaborations and partnerships
- Demonstrated proficiency using technology and developing systems
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Understand state and national trends in services for people with developmental disabilities, financing, and the regulatory environment which impact the operation and sustainability of not-for-profit entities
- Strong alignment with the mission with an openness to various expressions of faith and spirituality, and a willingness to embrace to core values and practices of L’Arche
- Ability to analyze and arrange complex functions and responsibilites into an organized system with clear assignment of roles, responsibility, and accountability
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Regional, national, and international travel (typically 3-4 trips/annually)
- Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with others across diverse identities.
COMPENSATION
Pay: $100,000.00 – $115,000.00 per year commensurate with experience, with a competitive benefits package including health/dental/vision, retirement, and paid time off.
