Across the country, people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities are sharing stories of faith, belonging, grief, hope, love, and joy.
Through deep listening and creative storytelling, Sacred Stories invites us to recognize the wisdom already present in our communities and discover the sacred in one another.

What is Sacred Stories?

Sacred Stories is a five-year initiative that seeks to elevate and celebrate the lived faith experiences of people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Together with partners across the country, we are listening deeply to communities, gathering stories, and creating films, retreats, prayers, and accessible resources that invite reflection and connection.
Rooted in more than sixty years of life in L’Arche, Sacred Stories believes that every person carries wisdom worth sharing. Through these stories, we hope to expand how we understand leadership, spirituality, and belonging—and create spaces wherer every voice can be heard.
Because some of the most sacred stories are the ones we discover together.

Where are we now?
Follow the Listening Tour
Our partners at Everable are bringing the Sacred Stories Listening Tour to communities across the United States! The crew is traveling by RV to over 20 L’Arche communities, building relationships and capturing stories that reveal the diverse ways people experience faith and belonging.
Every stop adds a new chapter to the journey! Split into two exciting road trips, the first tour is complete (orange route) and the second tour (red route) takes place in July and August of 2026!

Our Partners
Sacred Stories is made possible through Lilly Foundation Inc.’s National Storytelling Initiative on Christian Faith and Life, and through collaboration and shared vision with L’Arche Greater Washington, D.C., Everable, and the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate.
Together with our partners, we are creating spaces where the stories and spiritual wisdom of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can be heard, honored, and shared more widely.
Sacred Stories in the News
As the project unfolds, Sacred Stories is inspiring conversations about faith, belonging, and the gifts people with intellectual and developmental disabilities bring to the world.
