Each year, International Day of Happiness invites us to reflect on what it truly means to live well—not just individually, but together. Established by the United Nations, this day recognizes that happiness, well-being, and belonging are essential human goals. At L’Arche, we experience this truth through shared life, where joy is often found in small moments of connection, presence, and care. In this spirit, we’re honored to share a reflection from L’Arche USA Engagement Specialist Kyla Ponciano, who reminds us that happiness is not something we chase, but something we carry within us.
Happiness Within
Imagine being secured by a blanket of soft, cool earth, looking up at the night sky as tiny, little fireflies dance all around. Happiness comes from within oneself. It is the state of being, not a yearning; it is within us and always has been. We, as humans, have the capability to unlock this inner power that we possess, which most of us have forgotten. Happiness is a fundamental part of being human. If we just unlock it then, and only then, would we have a peaceful world. No wars, no hatred, no poverty, etc. Just love, understanding, and peace. Peace within ourselves and all around.
Reflect…
Did I offer peace to myself today? Did I smile at someone or myself today? If so, how did that make me feel?*
*Inspired by Henri Nouwen’s words, “Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love?’ These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will be many fruits, here in this world and the life to come.”
