Disability Pride Month is a month in July when people get together and break down barriers to celebrate the disability community, supporting and loving who they are while educating others that they are here to stay and they have a right to. When you begin to understand the disability community and Disabled individuals themselves, then it is easier to support them and understand that they have much more to offer society and the world. People with disabilities have superpowers that are unique and amazing.

Take autism for example, Autistic people concentrate amazingly well, pay great attention to details, think outside the box, and are persistent, creative, honest, and highly empathetic. We should minimize our attention what disabled people can’t do and celebrate what “superpowers” they have and what they can do.

There are a lot of famous artists, scientists, lawyers, mathematicians and other extraordinary jobs out there with excellent people who do well at their jobs while having a disability. Some famous scientists are Temple Grandin, Jashua Miele, Florence B. Seibert, Albert Einstein and Gustav Kirchoff. Some artists are Jason Becker, Jeff Becerra, Rick Allen, Stevie Wonder and Andrea Bocelli, just to name a few. They do an amazing job at what they do. So, don’t brush the disability community off; they may even surprise you. They should be celebrated every day, not just in July, because we are all human—we bleed the same blood, have families and friends, and are all trying to make a life worth living.

I believe that people should be equal no matter what. Disability Pride should not only be celebrated in July, but every day so that all can be made aware of the struggles that the disability community has overcome and still faces. Then people can really understand and be more polite, patient, and supportive. People with disabilities are humans too, and they have a right to be here with an equal place at the table. All of us are better for their talents, point of view, and strength.
