L’Arche Portland is seeking a Community Leader/ Executive Director (CL/ED). The CL/ED is responsible for guiding L’Arche Portland to authentically live the mission and values of L’Arche in its three dimensions: community, organization, and agency. The CL/ED implements the community mandate (5-year community goals and value priorities) in a way that is in line with the identity and mission of L’Arche Portland. This individual leads, manages, and administers daily operations in order to meet the financial, legal, and quality standards expected from all local, county, state, and national authorities. The CL/ED works cooperatively with L’Arche Portland’s Board of Directors and the Federation Representative from L’Arche USA.
Key Responsibilities:
Community – Build and develop a vibrant community life
Ensure a close and open presence to all community members and participants
Convene a community council, promoting trust and creativity within the group
Ensure the organization of community events and meaningful gatherings
Prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion in welcoming and supporting all people
Help to articulate the spiritual identity of L’Arche Portland
Ensure that the spiritual needs of all members are nurtured and respected
Build links with other L’Arche entities regionally, nationally, and internationally
Supervise and work closely with the Director of Community Life & Community Team
Agency – Guarantee the quality of care for people with intellectual disabilities
Ensures people with intellectual disabilities engaged with L’Arche Portland receive the appropriate professional and natural supports to thrive
Ensure and develop the professional skills of the support professional teams
Guarantee compliance with all regulations and ensure best practices
Implement a high level of consultation with specialists beyond L’Arche Portland
Supervise and work closely with the Director of Care & Care Team
Organization – Develop a sound business & development plan
Work with the Board of Directors and Finance Committee to develop and manage an annual budget to ensure it serves the mission priorities
Lead the design and ensure the implementation of an annual development plan, including campaigns, events, and engagement with foundations
Ensure L’Arche Portland is compliant with L’Arche USA’s membership agreement
Cultivate and steward relationships with major donors
Ensure responsible property management
Supervise and work closely with the Director of Operations & Development Team
People – Manage human resources
Ensure effective supervision, support, and evaluation of all employees, paying special attention to leadership development
Implement an efficient recruitment and orientation process, and as well as meaningful discernments and transitions for employees and volunteers
Support and empower employees and volunteers in a way that helps them develop their motivation and vocation (personal mission) in life and in L’Arche
Communications – Promote the message of L’Arche in the environment
Promote a culture of open and active communication between the community and its environment
Ensure regular engagement with long-time friends and supports through print and online communications
Develop close relationships with the relevant local authorities, professional organizations, and mission-aligned partners
Requirements of the Role:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2+ years of relevant experience; or 6+ years of management experience
Regular attendance at national L’Arche USA events
Builds relationships with local authorities
Leads and manages in the spirit of L’Arche and in accordance with the six principles of leadership in L’Arche: servant leadership, subsidiarity, accountability, partnership, involvement, and solidarity
Inspires trust
Qualities and Qualifications:
Person with a discerning spirit grounded in the vision, values, and mission of L’Arche
Person of compassion, courage and integrity
Demonstrated leadership and nonprofit management experience
Proven fundraiser
Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with others at all levels, including leaders and Board of Directors
Knowledge and experience of L’Arche
Experience in the field of intellectual disabilities
Clear effective communicator and an attentive listener
Humble and able to recognize a need for others and is willing to ask for help
Committed to good self-care and a healthy work/ home life balance
Reports To: L’Arche Portland’s Board of Directors
Salary: $80,000 – $90,000 (based upon relevant experience)
